We spent 6 months visiting 15 different countries. The best place to travel on a budget has to be Vietnam.
You can sleep for $10–15 dollars a night (potentially less if you share a room with others). The food, particularly in the south and in Hoi An, is amazing and can be had very cheaply. Street food is abundant, delicious, relatively safe, and obviously very affordable. Long distance travel is manageable via bus and is also quite cheap. To top it off, beer is about $0.50 per bottle. Tough to beat that.
What makes Vietnam even more attractive is the fact that it’s a world-class travel destination even if you weren’t on a budget. UNESCO sites like Halong Bay, Hoi An, Sapa, Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park all beckon. They will all amaze and inspire you, each in their own way. The National Park is home to the 1st and 3rd biggest caves in the world, while Hoi An offers unforgettable cuisine and culture. Halong Bay offers a mind-blowing assortment of limestone karst peaks, and Sapa has rice paddies that rival the best of Indonesia.
Vietnam should be at the top of everyone’s list, where you are a budget traveler or not.
